Coledale Round

Although not as famous as the Fairfield Horseshoe, the Coledale Horseshoe (often known as the Coledale Round) is another classic horseshoe walk in the Lakes, and every bit as dramatic as its more famous cousin. Situated in the North West Lakes, the Coledale Round links a series of Wainright summits with high ridges and fells surrounding the glacial valley of Coledale.

Found in the North West corner of the Lake District, the Coledale Round is an often overlooked walking area, as people understandably migrate towards the more famous peaks of the central Lakes. However, the Coledale Round is a fantastic days walk, with numerous summits along the way and spectacular views of the northern fells, including Skiddaw & Blencathra, along with views out to the Irish sea and across Solway Firth towards Dumfries & Galloway.

The day starts in the village of Braithwaite, a few miles West of Keswick. Whether tackled in a clockwise or anti-clowise direction, the round starts with a good character building ascent[!]. However, once up high, the majority of the day remains that way, with lofty ridges and high grassy fells linking the myriad of summits in the area. The standard round includes the Wainright summits of Grisedale Pike, Hopegill Head, Crag Hill, Sail, and Outerside, however, several other local summits can be incorporated in to the route if you're feeling the need to conquer more mountains.  One of which is the largest peak in the North western fells, Grasmoor, standing at 852m above sea level and with a commanding position above Crummock Water, it gives brilliant views of the Loweswater Fells and Buttermere Valley to the West.

A gem of a horseshoe walk and one that shouldn't be ignored for long!
