Located in the heart of the Lake District, the Fairfield Horseshoe is a classic big day out, taking in several Wainright peaks, the highest of which being Fairfield at the horseshoe. This walk give spectacular views across the hills of the central Lakes and Windermere.
The Fairfield Horseshoe is generally tackled from the South, starting near the famous tourist town of Ambleside which sits at the northern most point of Windermere. The route is commonly walked in an anti-clockwise direction, however, it can be walked in either direction (Our favourite is actually to go against the grain, going in a clockwise direction!).
Whether walked clockwise or anti-clockwise, the Fairfield Horseshoe takes in eight Wainwright summits, with Fairfield being the highest and standing proud at the head of the horseshoe at 873m above sea level. The route gives spectacular views to the South across Windermere, the largest lake in England; to the North, the snaking ridgeline of Dollywaggon Pike, Nethermost Pike and the famous Helvellyn. And to the West, the highest peaks of England, with the rugged skyline of Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Bow Fell visible on a clear day.
