Helvellyn in the second highest mountain in England, standing at 950m/2336ft tall and sitting in the middle of a chain of hills, including Fairfield and
Dollywagon Pike, which separate the major valley of Patterdale to the East from Grasmere, Ambleside and Thirlmire to the West.
With several routes to the summit, one of which being the [in]famous Striding Edge, Helvellyn is a true Lake Distrcit classic and one that should not go un-explored for long.
As mentioned above, Helvellyn is the home of Striding Edge. This is by far the most famous route to the top of the mountain, and deservedly so. Striding Edge is a
narrow(ish) rocky ridge which lies on the eastern side of the mountain, which along with Swirral Edge creates a dramatic horsehoe walking route around Red Tarn. The best starting point for this route
is the village of Glenridding in Patterdale.
Although Striding Edge can feel daunting at first, especially for those not used to the rocky nature ridge walks, the Striding Edge section of the walk only lasts 30-45 minutes and the hardest sections can be avoided if needed with a slightly lower level footpath. However, the reward is a truly amazing day in the mountains and one you will never forget.
Helvellyn can also be incorporated in to other walks in the area. There are shorter routes to the summit from the West, near Thirlmire, or perhaps you would like to connect several of the mountains along the chain Helvellyn is a part of for larger day out. Please get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate any requests you have.
