Scafell Pike

Standing at 978m/3209ft, Scafell Pike is the highest peak in England and commands stunning views across the Lake District and out to the Irish Sea (if the weather gods permit!), making it one of the most popular mountains in the Lake District.

With a number of fantastic routes to the summit, Scafell Pike is a must for any hill-go'er!

There are a number of ways to conquer Scafell Pike, giving access to the mountain from all sides, although it is not to be underestimated; Scafell Pike will be a challenge no matter which way it is tackled.

The shortest and most popular route to the summit is from Wasdale Head on the western side of the mountain. This is the start for the thousands of Three Peaks challengers who take on the mountain each year as part of the National 3 Peaks Challenge.

Another popular start location, and one of our favourites, is from Seathwaite on the northern side of the mountain, taking in what is known as the the 'Corridor Route' to reach the summit. This route is a touch longer than from Wasdale but creates a lovely loop walk, rather than an out and back along the same path, and gives you the option of bagging a few other summits along the way, such as Ill Crag and Great End.

Other routes also exist from the South and East, these being from Hardknott Pass and Langdale respectively. Both are fantastic routes, offering dramatic landscapes and rugged terrain, however, we only recommend these for the more experienced hill walkers due to their length and volume of ascent.
