Intro to Navigation

This course represents the first steps in to the world of mountain navigation. We will take a refresher look at the basic map reading skills before moving on to look at the navigational techniques you may need to explore the pathed regions of our beautiful mountain landscape.

These courses can be run in most locations, however, they are best run on lower mountains and rolling countryside, for example the Pentland or Ochil Hills, where there is a mix of paths and easy to navigate none pathed areas.

Topics discussed as part of this course:

  • What does a map actually represent (2D vs 3D),
  • Understanding of map scales,
  • Orientating the map correctly,
  • Use of orientated map to identify features,
  • Accurate grid references,
  • Contour interpretation,
  • Measuring distances on the map,
  • Measuring distances on the ground (e.g. Pacing & timing),
  • How to take and use compass bearings,
  • Understanging magnetic declination,
  • Navigational strategies (e.g. Legs, Hand rails, attack points, etc...),
  • Relocation techniques,
