Taking on a different challenge...
The National Three Peaks, although a fantastic challenge, can become quite busy at certain times of the year, and being such a popular challenge, has already been completed by many people, so what is the next challenge?
Welcome to the Alternative Three Peaks. In this challenge we tackle the second highest mountain of Wales, England and Scotland, Carnedd Llewelyn, Helvellyn and Ben Macdui respectively. Cumulatively, these peaks are only slightly lower than the standard three peaks, however, they are still a tough challenge, arguably harder in places, but they are generally much quieter mountains, and allow for slightly easier drives between them.
As with our standard three peaks challenge, we have decided to spread this challenge over three days. This allows everyone to truly enjoy each of these beautiful mountains during daylight hours, along with helping to protect the beautiful mountain environment by minimising footpath erosion and noise pollution during the evening.
We normally kick things off in Wales by tackling Carnedd Llewelyn as part of the Carneddau Horseshoe, a stunning ring of peaks sitting on the northern side of the Ogwen valley; you even get a cheeky little scramble thrown in for good measure. Day two we head for the Lake District and Helvellyn, taking on Striding Edge, a breathtaking rocky ridge line leading right to the summit of the mountain. We then finish our challenge in Scotland with the highest of the three, Ben Macdui, found high on the Cairngom Plateau. En route you also get the chance to tick off the 6th highest mountain in the UK, Cairn Gorm, if you so feel inclined, before heading down to the mountain town of Aviemore to celebrate.
