Helvellyn is the second highest distinct mountain in England, standing at 950m/2336ft tall and sitting in the middle of a chain of hills, including Fairfield and Dollywagon Pike, which separate the major valley of Patterdale to the East from Grasmere, Ambleside and Thirlmire to the West.
With several routes to the summit, one of which being the [in]famous Striding Edge ridge, Helvellyn is a true Lake District classic and one that should not go un-explored for long.

As mentioned above, Helvellyn is the home of Striding Edge. This is by far the most famous route to the top of the mountain, and deservedly so. Striding Edge is a narrow(ish) rocky ridge on the eastern side of the mountain, which along with Swirral Edge creates a dramatic horseshoe walking route around the beautiful Red Tarn. The best starting point for this route is the village of Glenridding in Patterdale, from which we head West up the flanks of Birkhouse Moor to approximately 700m above sea level. From here we start to get our first true views of Helvellyn, Red Tarn and Striding Edge. Continuing West along the ridge line from Birkhouse Moor, the path progressively become narrower as it morphs in to the legendary Striding Edge.
Although Striding Edge can feel daunting at first, especially for those not used to the rocky nature of ridge walks, the Striding Edge section of the walk only lasts 30-45 minutes and the hardest sections can be avoided if needed with a slightly lower level footpath. However, the reward is a truly amazing day in the mountains and one you will never forget as Striding Edge ends almost directly under the summit of Helvellyn, making it really feel like you have conquered the mountain. From the summit we return towards Glenridding via Swirral Edge on the Northern side of Red Tarn, with an optional short detour to bag the little summit of Catstye Cam.
Helvellyn can also be incorporated in to other walks in the area; There are shorter routes to the summit from the West, starting near Thirlmire, or perhaps you would like to connect several of the mountains along the chain Helvellyn is a part of for larger day out. Please get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate any requests you have.
