Situated in the South eastern Lake District, the Kentmere Round is another classic horseshoe walk. Similar in nature to the more famous Fairfield Horseshoe, the Kentmere Round takes in up to nine Wainwright summits and has spectacular views over the southern Lakes, Howgill Fells and the Yorkshire Dales.
The Kentmere Round begins from the small hamlet of Kentmere, just a few miles from the village of Staveley. As with many of the great Lake District horseshoe walks, the day starts with a character building ascent straight out of the gate towards the Garburn Pass, following an old pack horse trail up to approximately 450m above sea level.
From the high point of the Garburn Pass we turn North and ascend the first Wainwright summit of the day, Yoke, standing at 706m. From here we continue along broad grassy ridge lines, taking in the summits of Ill Bell, Frostwick and Thornthwaite Crag before reaching the apex of the horseshoe and the highest point of the day, Highstreet, at 828m. From here we also gain views towards Ullswater and the craggy outlines of the Helvellyn Missif to the North West and towards Haweswater in the East.
After soaking up the scenery from Highstreet, we begin our return journey along the eastern arm of the horseshoe, taking in a number of additional Wainwright summits, including Harter Fell and Kentmere Pike, before finally descending back in to the Kentmere valley and returning to the start.
