Located in the heart of the Lake District, the Fairfield Horseshoe is a classic big day out, taking in several Wainright peaks, the highest of which being Fairfield at the apex of the horseshoe. This walk gives spectacular views across the hills of the central Lakes and the famous Windermere, England's largest lake.
The Fairfield Horseshoe is generally tackled from the South, starting near the picturesque town of Ambleside which sits at the northern most point of Windermere. The route is commonly walked in an anti-clockwise direction, however, it can be walked in either direction, and our favourite is actually to go against the grain, going in a clockwise direction!
Whether tackled clockwise or anti-clockwise, the Fairfield Horseshoe starts with a bracing uphill opener to get the blood flowing; however, once at altitude the walk generally remains that way, taking in eight Wainwright summits, with Fairfield being the highest, standing proud at 873m above sea level. The route gives spectacular views to the South across Windermere and out towards Morecombe Bay. To the North, the snaking ridge line of Dollywaggon Pike, Nethermost Pike and the famous Helvellyn. And to the West, the highest peaks of England, with the rugged skyline of Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Bow Fell visible on a clear day.
After 11 miles/17.5 kilometres of stunning scenery we complete our walk, returning to Ambleside to a very deserved victory drink/ice cream/chocolate bar (delete as appropriate!).
