Meall nan Tarmachen, or the 'Hill of the Ptarmigan', is one of our favourite mountains; with a summit at 1044m and a series of shoulder summits all strung along a beautiful ridge line of folded rock formations with big grassy slopes and expansive views across the central Highlands.
The ascent of Meall nan Tarmachen starts from the National Trust of Scotland car park, high up on the small but very scenic road to Lochan na Lairige reservoir. This car park also acts as the starting point for walks to the Munros of the Ben Lawers massif.
From our start point we head West, steadily climbing the eastern flank of Meall nan Tarmachen to reach a small shoulder summit at 923m. From here there is a short sharp climb up to the main ridge line and the summit of Meall nan Tarmachen. This is a great spot to take a short rest and soak up the 360 degree views.
From the summit we continue westward along the main ridge line, taking in the summits of Meall Garbh, Beann nan Eachan and Craig na Callich. The ridge line offers expansive views across the region, with airy (but not scary) drops along the way, as well as high mountain lochans, rocky steps and hopefully some of the elusive Ptarmigan.
Once we reach the final summit along the ridge line, Creag na Cailich, we then descend southward until we reach one of the old tracks associated with the building of the local dams and reservoirs. This gives us a few kilometres of relatively easy walking with good views to stretch the legs out en-route back to the National Trust car park.
