Situated in the vast expanse of northern Sutherland, with panoramic views of the Scottish North coast and the Flow Country, Ben Hope is the most northerly Munro in Scotland. At 927m/3041ft and standing in isolation, Ben Hope is truly a beautiful mountain, visible for miles all across the region. Originally known as Beinn Hòb, or 'Bay Mountain', its name derives from a mix of Gaelic and Norse, and was likely given to the mountain due to its proximity to a several sheltered sea lochs where safe berth could be found for ships. Ben Hope is also part of the Moine Thrust, a large geological fault system running right across the North West Highlands of Scotland; this is what gives the western flank of the mountain its distinct craggy appearance.
Being over 200 miles North of Edinburgh and Glasgow, for many Ben Hope is not a simple day walk, instead making a weekend, or long weekend, of the adventure is the way to go. Maybe you would like to tackle the most northerly Corbett as well, or Beinn Spionnaaidh, or the rugged Ben Loyal with its dramatic summit tors?...

The ascent of Ben Hope begins from Muiseal in Strath More on the western side of the mountain, just a couple of miles South of Loch Hope. Road side parking is available at the start of the walk. The first few hundred metres start with a moderate climb following the Allt a'Mhuiseal burn as it tumbles down numerous small waterfalls on its way to the Strathmore River in the valley below.
After approximately a kilometre the gradient starts to ease as we pass from the steeper, craggy western side of Ben Hope on to the broad, grassy upper slopes. Heading almost due North we continue to gradually gain height, picking our way through the grassy terraces. Keep an eye out for Ptarmigan and red deer as we climb.
Approaching the summit plateau we finally start to get a glimpse of the one view we have yet to see, the panorama of the North coast, with its craggy shoreline, sea lochs, deep blue seas and pristine white beaches; and on a blue sky day, this is one of our favourite views anywhere in Scotland.
After soaking up the views for as long as possible, we start to make our way back down the grassy southern flanks of Ben Hope, following the clear waters of the Allt a'Mhuiseal burn and finally returning to our start location..
